My column has been running in various forms in this publication for over 15 years now and I’m excited to announce to readers my team’s biggest project for Inland Australia yet - Total Native Fishing.
The aim is to enlighten people on the AMAZING quality of fishing and huge variety of experiences right on their doorstep, and encourage people enjoy our wonderful fish and environment in the most sustainable way possible.
It’s taken some 25 years to collect the knowledge and footage but viewers are in for a real treat with fish and topics covered like never before. Starting with an over view of the Murray Darling Basin, Australia’s biggest catchment, we then introduce the stars of the film, the majestic golden perch and the mighty Murray cod.
Goldens are widespread throughout the Murray darling basins rivers, and further more stocking in man-made impoundments has seen some grow to a MASSIVE 15kg plus. The little ones under a kilo or so are brilliant and sustainable table fare, while the bigger ones are breeders and should be released. In fact you’ll see footage of the big ones spawning, a rare and amazing sight.
Murray Cod are the stuff of legends, growing to well over 100kg they are by far our biggest and most revered freshwater fish. In the film you’ll see footage of a swag of big cod from across the Murray darling basin including a beastly sized specimen that kills and toys with a sizable 3 kg golden perch, it will BLOW your socks off!
Topics covered in the film include Giant Cod and Goldens on both lures and fly. While the film is primarily a hard core fishing doco, there is also a beginner’s chapter detailing the cheapest and easiest way to get started – bait fishing from the bank. My friends and I drew on my years of teaching fishing for cod and perch, and the common questions we would get asked. My production team has helped immensely including graphic illustrations of where and how the main rigs and used.
We cover both river and lake fishing and there is also a special look at bush safety. And most importantly let’s not forget the AMAZING scenery, landscapes and characters that make inland Australia a unique and special experience. On this note I would like to thank right here in this column the hundreds of people that have helped us complete this unique project…if test screening feedback is anything to go off we have something special on our hands that will encourage more people experience the magic of inland fishing and the delights that come along the way.
The film is available only on DVD, and only online, support so far has been great, you can find out more on the official web site www.totalnative.com
