FISHING AUSTRALIA host, Rob Paxevanos, like many switched on offshore fishermen is a fan of the use of single hooks when trolling large, deep diving lures for tuna. With the advent of pre-made single hook rigs, the process of retro-fitting this type of hook has been made that much easier.
On his recent trip to the remote south east corner of Tasmania, Rob demonstrated the benefits of this technique to great effect on Bluefin tuna using Williamson Lures' Armoured Single Assist Hook. This rig is equipped with a strong VMC black nickel hook attached to armored "bullet-proof" material with a protective tube to prevent chafing.
The Assist Hook range were originally made for Williamson Lures jigs like.the Abyss and Rotating Flutter jig and have the advantage that the use of split rings allows for the hook to be rigged either up or down depending on your preference. The rig also allows for a fast change out of the hooks in the event of damage.
As demonstrated in "Fishing the Edge", Rob has adapted these hooks to suit trolling lures such as the Rapala XRap Magnum Range. This is done by simply unlooping the red braid off the spilt rings and then looping it straight through the eyelet of the lure [see the pictures hereabouts]. The result is less leverage on the hook and no split rings or trebles to bend, break or rust. The hook up rate with this rig is markedly improved and the holding power of a single hook over a traditional treble-based rig is exceptional given that there are no other hooks to pull out the one that has found its mark.
The Armored Single Assist Hook is available in 6/0, 8/0 and 9/0 sizes.
Williamson Lures has an extensive range of pre-rigged single and double hook rigs. For more information please visit the Williamson Lures website.
